Early this month before the All Star game in Las Vegas, David Stern made an impassioned speech for legalising sports gambling in the state. Though the current NBA commissioner Adam Silver has been constantly pushing for a reformed approach to sports gambling, it has been refused by sports leagues across the nation. Till recently Adam Silver found few supporters to this cause, it is only now that David Stern has come forward to support his protégé. Though NBA like other sports leagues had opposed move to legalise sports gambling in New Jersey, it is expected to earn profits from a broader policy which will help betting in sports a nationwide activity.
David Stern’s Support for Adam Silver
In a recent interview with CNBC’s SquawkBox, Stern stated that sports gambling can be successfully carried out under tough regulations. Though Stern was earlier opposed to legal sports gambling his views have changed due to his close association with Adam Silver in running NBA through 2004 and 2009 through All Star Game. During his interview with Sports Illustrated in 2009, Stern showed his mellowed stance towards legal sports gambling as he stated that NBA’s corporate view has morphed over the year though overall opinion of other sports authorities was against introduction of gambling in professional sports.
In general the sports leagues have been opposed to authorised gambling due to scandals in the past like Black Sox fiasco in 1919 and Major League Baseball point saving followed by issues of game fixing in NCAA and NFL. David Stern supported Adam in the argument that technical advantages will make it difficult for unlawful practices in legal sports gambling. He stressed on existing multimillion dollar sports betting industry which is thriving as an underground operation and is neither monitored nor regulated creating situation for illegal bookmakers to flourish. Once sports betting is legalised, strict regulations and licensing protocol will ensure legitimate operations.
